It Works Wonder As A Cheaper Alternative To Speedlite 430EX September 7, 2010 Neo Lee (Earth) This flash is better than the built-in flash by far, and it is a pretty alternative to 430EX.
Pros:
* TTL compatible. It communicates well with the camera to select the right focal length, ISO and light power.
* AF-assist beam allows the camera's auto-focus to lock in to the target in dark places (not completely dark).
* Light power is bright enough for bounce shooting. 45-degree tilt to the ceiling will produce superb images with soft highlights and shadows, which is one main reason why people go for external flash guns.
* It has built-in a diffuser and a white reflector which is good for creating a catch light.
* In Slave mode, the flash can be triggered with another flash remotely. In fact, you can use Opteka flashgun with ordinary point-n-shoot cameras. When the camera flash fires, the Opteka flashgun will also fire.
Cons:
* Won't support high-speed shooting. It sure can freeze the normal everyday motions of human, animals, cars and water drops. It can freeze the motions of a fast spinning fan alright but I can see some motion blur in it. Basically this means it's a slow flash. If you're looking to freeze the fast motion of flying bullets or something, this is not for you.
Great flash for the price August 22, 2010 J. Beams (Columbus, OH) In general a great flash. It hooked up to my Canon XS with ETTL support and I was taking properly-exposed photos immediatly. A couple things I've noticed after a couple days' usage:
- The manual indicates 90 flashes with 4 AA batteries. That doesn't seem like a large number, but I'm guessing that also assumes a full power flash each time. I'm still to reach draining my first set of alkaline batteries, but I've only taking about 40 photos with flash so far. It does take a few seconds to power up to ready at first and if a full-power exposure is required.
- The battery polarity is indicated on the front inside wall of the battery box. I didn't see this the first time inserting batteries and used the manual to figure it out, then noticed the markings later.
- If the beep indicator is on and the flash is not rotated in the 0 degree position it will beep constantly. This is probably just to indicate that it cannot properly figure out the exposure with ETTL anymore, but if you want to switch between and not make a lot of noise in the process be sure to turn the audio indicator off before rotating the flash.
- When the flash is charging it is rather loud, or at least louder than I expected. I don't have another to compare it to though so maybe this is normal.
- The zoom motor is loud. This was mentioned in other reviews though so I kind of expected it. It also zooms through the full range every time it's powered on (probably a self-test).
- The LCD is effected when pushing the buttons (as if I were pressing directly on the LCD, which obviously would be bad). I hope this doesn't cause the LCD to fail at some point.
- The backlight source appears to only be on the left side of the LCD, meaning the right side is darker. It's still adequately bright enough to read though.
- I tried it as a slave using my camera's built-in flash as the master and it worked great. You do have to manually set everything up on it first though as mentioned in other reviews.
Bad locking machanism August 20, 2010 moltogato I recently purchased this item. Unfortunately, since the locking knob was stuck, I was unable to lock the flash onto the camera's hot shoe and therefore unable to test it on my Canon 50d camera.
I requested a refund for this product and Amazon promptly responded. Amazon's service was absolutely first class.
Super!! July 2, 2010 Margie Duerr (Janesville, WI United States) I don't use a lot of flash, but this unit is perfect for my needs. An occassional fill flash. It works seamlessly with my Canon 50D. Very happy with this purchase.
Good "my first flash" June 22, 2010 Frank Jones (San Jose, CA USA) For the price this flash works great. I recently dusted off my 300d to give to my son and he noted I have 2 flashes for my camera and wanted one(a 580ex II and a a 430ex II). He missed out as I had just sold a 580ex. Anyhow, the kid needed a flash to tinker with so I picked up one of these. I played with it for a little while and overall was impressed for the money. Metering is a tad off with a t2i and goes where it wants but for this price, it works. As was noted in other reviews it will work in as a slave to a 580 but only in manaual, and I found I got better results with just my 2 flashes(I'll probably pick up another 430 for myself), but for a kid with an ancient 300d it works great and has a decent reach.
