nikon D500 May 16, 2010 Dennis A. Eaker (Missouri) camera works great. one of the best if not the best camera on the market
Nikon D5000 Digital SLR Camera w/ 18-55mm VR Lens + 55-200mm VR Zoom Lens + 8GB Memory Card + Spare EN-EL9 Battery + Case + Came April 18, 2010 Sabine Becker-Galle (MOB,AL,USA) Perfect Service and Quick Delivery. We love the camera and there is everything in the package to start after charging the battery. The camera is easy to handle and we took the first great fotos at the weekend we've got the camera. I was amazed, what a quality of photos, better than my old manuell Minolta XD7. Bright, clear and deep. And the LCD is very sharp und colourful, you can decide on it if the photo is sharp and good.
Excellent Camera: Easy, Fun: Options to the nth degree. March 26, 2010 Ryan Pauley (Houston, TX USA) Upgraded to a Digital SLR from a Casio Point-and-shoot. Basically my wife and I had gotten tired of the limited options and wanted to get a good camera that would (fingers-crossed) last a decade or so. I have had and worked with film SLRs, but not for a good many years.
The Camera:
Looking into it, we thought to get either the Nikon or the Pentax Kx, but everyone I knew who was into photography said we should get the Nikon -- or a Canon. I didn't want to get a Canon. I had a Film-Rebel EOS and while it worked, there was always something about it that I didn't like. I think it's just a stylistic difference. Wanting to try the other side, we went with the Nikon.
Now with cameras being digital, I've heard of color interpretation differences in the photo sensor, and I've heard the Canon/Nikon difference likened to the Kodachrome vs. Fujichrome color, and liking the blue-green-ness of the Fuji spectrum, I've found the Nikon holds up to that well.
The ridiculous amount of specialized settings is great, though I find myself using either AUTO setting or Manual for most shots. The Aperture-priority/Shutter-Priority are sometimes good, but sometimes they don't do what I want them to.
The Camera's video function is also a really nice feature. Good, High quality video and decent sound recording. While the focusing and zoom work, if you plan to use the zoom mid-recording it's best to leave the focus on manual too or you risk jarring the shot to switch it over OR work out of focus. I've been exceedingly impressed with the color in the video-mode, almost richer than what the eye can easily notice, and easy to mix into a regular photography session. I like that the video record/stop button is different from the photo trigger -- you can't accidentally take video when you're trying to set up a photograph (as I found I often did with the Casio's digital-menu video/photo option).
The lenses:
Both lenses (18-55mm & 55-200mm, both VR) focus well, but if you want to quickly rip off a few fast-acting shots, I find the focus-motor to often be slow and doesn't focus on the right things. Perhaps there are better settings to use in this type of scenario, but I find it's best to just throw it into manual focus and leave the camera to figure out shutter& aperture, which it CAN do fastly.
The other Cameta Goodies:
The battery gets a good amount of hours before going dim, but it's definitely nice to have an extra in wait.
The 8 GIG SD card is a good solid amount, never yet have we come close to filling it. I have a backup SD card just in case of a long trip, but I have no idea when we'll ever use it.
The Camera Case is nice, but it's bigger than I'd prefer. I will probably buy/make a smaller on-the-go case for the camera and the lenses, but for storage, I'm happy with the large case.
The instructional DVDs, while simplistic, are good to get a quick handle on what the camera could do.
And while I have yet to use the cleaning kit, I'm sure when the time comes to give things a quick air-blast or lens-paper wipe, it'll work fine.
Overall:
We're both exceedingly happy with this purchase. Aside from some sort of technical failure, I expect this camera will treat us well for a long while.
This is what you need if you take sports pics! February 23, 2010 Gary C. Summers We have a 10 year old and 6 year old that both play football, baseball, and basketball. We bought this package to replace our Panasonic Lumix FZ30. It was a good camera, but we often stuggled to get any good pics in a basketball gym. Well not anymore. After tinkering with the settings in the Manual dial setting, my wife was getting bright, clear, crisp images! And this was the first weekend we had it. I read Ken Rockwells review of the camera ([...] and search Nikon D5000). He is a big fan of the Nikon D40. I researched that and found an article that mentioned that the price for the D40 had went UP due to his reviews. The D5000 had dropped!!! We went with the D5000 and have no regrets. Sure there are features that we may never use, but it's nice to have them in case we want them. All in all, this is a great camera. Especially if you have kids. We can't wait for baseball and football season to see what kind of gems this camera helps produce. What else is nice, is if you are not inclinded to tinker, there are dial settings that will allow you to take great picks right out of the box. You will not be disappointed with this purchase. It is a great investment!
EXCELLENT! November 16, 2009 Danielle N. Feather (Philadelphia, PA) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This camera is great! I bought it for my boyfriend and I to share but it turns out that I want to take it with me EVERYWHERE! It's easy to use and takes beautiful pictures! I love this camera! If you're not sure what you want, a D40 might be the better way to go, it doesn't have as many features but it takes nice pictures and the lenses are all interchangeable. I am happy with my camera and the deal I got but it was a bit pricey in my opinion.
