Pictured Idem out of production digital replacement sent October 24, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had used the original L-398A Light Meter for over 20 years and found it to do everything I ever wanted it to do, the digital replacement now being sent out by the company as teh new tech is not the same. I was sadly disapointed in the performance of the light meter it was not as easy to use, has no readings in footcandles, and generally is just for still photo work. I work in the TV media and needed a small field meter for field light kits. The original worked perfect, until stolen. Will look for one of those second hand. For still work this new meter is first rate, however my digital camera does all the same things so why use a meter? For TV lighting the use of the old Footcandle scale is very important, I wish they would have informed me they would change the meter before shipping it.
Sekonic ROCKS!! October 10, 2008 I bought my first Sekonic Studio Deluxe light meter back in the 70's while studying photography in college. The product has remained virtually unchanged since those days, which is a testament to the fine design, and it is still the perfect light meter for either digital or film use. It is easy to use and not difficult at all to master. In-camera light meters are always some sort of average, and while they are fine for most shots, there are many delicate situations where you need one area of a picture to be perfect. Also, in-camera light meters are judging the light from a distance. With this Sekonic, you take the reading AT THE SUBJECT and set the camera accordingly - works especially well in backlit or other tricky lighting situations. It is perfect for use in portraiture work. If you are serious about photography, take the leap and get this meter. You will not be sorry!

Getting the image right depends on the proper exposure and to make the really arresting images getting the proper exposure is tricky and often beyond the reach or ingenuity of built-in meters. For most photographic situations incident metering is preferable for a variety of reasons. I recently upgraded to this meter and found it extremely easy to learn and to use and I'm seeing more consistent results, especially with still lifes and table top subjects.
