Fake Advertisement January 3, 2009 0 out of 15 found this review helpful
Two day after after receiving a notice that my order had been shipped from Hobby Warehouse 1, I received an email: "We have cancelled your Amazon.com order because the seller informed us that it was placed against an unauthorized listing." The refund was delayed to my next month billing period on my credit card. How can they take my money and 2 days later tell me the ad was fake? I am sure the D90 is a great camera, but I did not receive one from my order on Amazon.
Photography is fun again January 1, 2009 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
For some time now I have gotten by with a compact camera with a small sensor that would take fine pictures if you had all day to wait for the thing to start up, listen to the motor whine as the lens zooms in and out to frame the shot, and wait for two more intervals for the camera to focus, expose and record the picture before being ready for the next picture. All that is gone. The D90 is fast. It lets you fire the camera up, frame, focus, and shoot as quickly and often times more quickly than the old film-type SLR's. It is so fast to expose I can easily catch things in mid-air which was something I could do only by sheer luck with the smaller camera. If you are a former film-SLR photographer as I am, the fundamentals of exposure for movement and depth of field are easily implemented with intuitive and convenient controls and menus. My other camera is a Canon G3 and I was concerned that I might suffer confusion between the two cameras but the Nikon is quick to learn and I now prefer it. While the D90 with an 18-105mm lens is relatively large and heavy, it fits nicely in the hands and feels like a real instrument. The 18-105 lens hits the sweet spot for focal lengths, going from wide angle to moderate telephoto and while I had thought that I might need to get a 55-200mm lens I'm not sure I will need it unless a very special need for a longer lens comes along. The viewfinder is excellent and I am glad to be back to using one but the high resolution LCD backpanel is a joy to behold and wonderful for reviewing shots and in live mode for videos. I have had the camera for a month and have gone picture-crazy with it including our Christmas vacation. Pictures are uniformly sharp and beautifully exposed with the usual foibles in tricky or low light situations that are difficult for any camera. Performance with the built-in flash and with an external SB-600 is as close to flawless as one could expect and better than any other camera I have used. Finally, the ease of switching over and capturing great video is outstanding. The 30 frames per second capture rate produces smooth, well exposed video. I have seen criticism that the automatic focus does not work in video mode which is true. You focus initially and start the video and the focus stays there but you can use the zoom. I have not found the focus issue to be a big problem because the videos I take do not typically go from distant to close focus but it is an option to use the manual focus ring which does work in video mode. All in all, what can I say? Photography is fun again.
If I had a gripe, it would be that some cameras like the Canon open a new folder in memory for pictures taken on different days and the Nikon does not. This is very handy to organize pictures if the camera is used over a period of days before downloading the shots to a computer. One other niggle is that the camera does not shut down automatically if it is not used for a period of time. Battery life is qood, by the way, but not so good if you forget to turn it off. Otherwise, I love the camera and while it is not cheap, it is actually a good buy for the features. In default mode this camera takes pictures that average 3.1 MB in size so lots of hard disk space and a capable computer are recommended.
Bloody Awsome December 30, 2008 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
I am new to this world of DSLR. I had done my reserch before buying D90. I was very impressed to read about the high ISO capabilities of D90. But when i used a high ISO value (1600) the results were not too appeciable. I could see some red/green spots scattered across. Again this was only when i used a high ISO value.
But apart from this issue, i love my D90. I not planning to return it back for any other product. As people say the Build quality was amazing. The shutter sound is just gr8. 4.5 frames per second is very fast. You will really turn heads when u are shooting at that fps. Picture quality is awsome. Again gr8 ergonomics. One might find the size and weight a bit high compared to the low end DSLR model. But again it is just fine for my hands (I am 6 feet tall).
Overall I am a very satisfied coustomer and would recommend this to any one who is new to the DSLR world. Very easy to learn the controls :)
Happy Shooting...
Great still camera, decent video camera December 29, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
This camera is perfect for taking photographs. The video is soft and the codec is mediocre.
Love my new D90! December 25, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
I won't get into all the details, which are covered in the other lengthy reviews. I've researched this camera alot! I've decided to retire my Canon and Olympus cameras and take advantage of my boyfriend's huge selection of Nikon lenses and accessories (he just bought a D300 to replace his brand new D200!) I've having so much fun with this new camera. One complaint, Live View! Focusing takes soooooo long, compared with the Olympus and Canon. I shoot low a lot and this is a function that I've habitually used with my Canon. I guess I'll get over that habit quickly and find other ways to quick-shoot without the hassle of Live View. I'll use it only for framing. I shoot one-handed more than not, and the ergonomics of this camera are perfect for my style. It's also very light-weight. I got the kit with the 18-105 lens. This has been a fine multi-purpose for my shooting so far. I still give it a 5-star rating. What a fabulous camera.
