5 out of 5 stars It makes me a better photographer   December 24, 2008

I am a novice photographer. This camera is so easy to use and produces such high quality pictures that it has made me seem like a much better photgrapher than I rightly deserve . I can usually find areas of single picture that has interest but not always the whole picture. Because of this camera, I can enhance those areas and create a good photograph from a mediocre one.

4 out of 5 stars An Entry lebel Pro DSLR   December 20, 2008

This is an excellent camera for serious amateur or entry level professional. However, the camera has few setting for novice DSLR users e.g. flower mode which I find pretty useless. Maybe Nikon is targeting few customers from it's coolpix range camera users but I give a star less for those extra setting.

The ISO range is very good, but the metering is not always at it's best. I have shot few hundreds photos with 3F auto exposure bracketing but sometime I got all 3 shots underexposed. The metering system could have been better. Only electronic cable release is available. It should have been made a part of standard accessory.
The bottom line is that the camera dose produce excellent photographs.

5 out of 5 stars It's the iPhone of Nikon cameras   December 20, 2008

I'll admit up-front that I have only spent one day shooting with the D90 and have upgraded from a Nikon D70. The D70 was a great ~$1000 camera which I bought immediately upon its release. My photography improved dramatically with that camera and I had little motivation to invest in a new camera body.

That complacency lasted until I heard about the D90. I wanted to explore HD video recording using my collection of Nikon lenses. I also wanted to increase my ISO to 3200 for night photography. Also, my D70 was having difficulty recognizing memory cards, so it was time for a replacement.

The best way I can describe my upgrade experience is that using the D90 after three years with my D70 was like switching from a monochrome nokia phone to an iPhone. This camera is packed with useful features. The high-resolution screen on the back allows for impressive zooms that can verify in the field beyond doubt if you got the detail you wanted in your picture. It's got in-camera organization of your images however you want. You can store them to different folders on the memory card, sort them by date, and even have the camera record every image in RAW and JPEG.

Most everything is pretty much in place between the two cameras. Adapting to the D90 is fairly intuitive, but there are several display fields that I have to look up in the manual because I don't know what they're referring to. The interface is so intuitive, it also contributes to the iPhone analogy I made earlier. This is a well-thought-out device. You can see the years of product research that have been invested to making the user experience rich within the D90. Doesn't make sense why they chose Ashton Kutcher to be their spokesmodel.

If you're considering this camera, I'd assume you're already well enough versed in the world of photography that the following recommendations are of little value. I provide them for someone who might be considering a significant upgrade in their camera kit from a point-and-shoot.

Here are some other products that go with the D90 like milk & cookies:
Nikon SB-600 Speedlight Flash for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras (most people don't need the SB800- this one is excellent)
Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
Nikon Zoom-Nikkor - Telephoto zoom lens - 70 mm - 210 mm - f/4.5-5.6 Ai-S - Nikon F

5 out of 5 stars Huge step-up   December 17, 2008

I upgraded to the D90 after using the D60 for a couple weeks. I had high expectations, but I was blown away when I put my hands on this body. The size, construction and control placement stood out immediately. This is a true photographer's camera, and it makes the D60 feel like a starter DSLR (which it is).

I'm just getting started with DSLR (I had a good, non-interchangable Olympus digital, and a great Minolta film SLR), so I wasn't sure if I'd use half the features of the D90. After a week, I'm finding all of the functionality to be exceptionally helpful. I'd lose so much with the D60 compared to this body.

I also ordered the Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras and WOW! My first day of shooting in the house, I had a dozen fantastic portraits of my daughter and wife with unreal bokeh!

If you are thinking of stepping up, and you want to have more fun, and get the kind of shots you'd place in a frame, don't hesitate for a second. BTW, the low light capabilities are impressive. You can easily use ISO 1600 and even 3200 for prints. Couple that with a fast lens, and you don't need to flash your kid indoors.

5 out of 5 stars Great camera, but decide where you are buying from....   December 11, 2008

D90 is a great camera comparing its price with other camera. Quality it produce is great.
But only buy from MOST trusted seller. I bought my D90 online from Ritz camera two months ago, but.. my there was no warranty card. The bag contains CD-ROM, manuals & warranty card was in opened plastic bag. I contact them and they replied that they are investigating the matter. Then no more messages!! since two months.I send couple of email reminding them about seriousness of matter, but no reply.
I am really disappoint by the after sales service of ritz camera. I preferred B&H or CALUMET but by listening good comment from others i first time (and last time) i buy from them. I am still struggling for my warranty card.
